Why You Don’t Feel Good: And How Therapy Can Help

You’re scrolling your phone at midnight, even though you’re exhausted. You cancel plans because your anxiety is back. You berate yourself for not being able to just “get it together.”

There are so many of us walking – or running – through life feeling anxious, low or disconnected. Even though life looks rosy on the outside.

But what if the problem isn’t you?
What if you don’t feel good because you’re simply living in the wrong conditions?

Human Mismatch Theory: How Modern Life Conflicts with Our Biology

My Human Mismatch Theory describes the misalignment with human biology and modern life. Humans evolved to move between stress and recovery.  In the past, life meant moving, eating naturally, forging deep connections, sleeping shortly after sunset and rising with the sun. Rather than an abstract purpose, the purpose of life was survival. There wasn’t a search for meaning, because there was enough meaning in surviving. Living in a group, as one, provided a feeling of belonging that we now crave.

How Stress Worked for Early Humans – And Why It’s Different Now

Back then, stress came and went. It helped us act in the short term, then we returned to balance. Now, modern life keeps us in stress mode. And without those basic things – movement, rest, connection, nutrition and real purpose – our minds and bodies struggle to reset. We stay stuck in stress.

The Ancient Stress Response: What It Is and Why It Matters Today

The stress response is the body’s ancient alarm system. It is not something to fear – quite the opposite, it’s your body doing what it’s designed to do and does well. Releasing hormones like adrenaline and cortisol to nudge you in the best direction – whether you need to flee to safety, run long distances on a hunt or demonstrate your commitment to the tribe, your motivating hormones will get you there.

When Stress Goes Off Track: Modern Triggers and Misaligned Signals

Once you’ve fulfilled the mission, the body releases different hormones. These include oxytocin and endorphins, which ease the response, support connection, return the body to balance, and importantly log the behaviour so the brain knows what to do next time.

This stress response is an ancient system still in full operation. It’s like bringing a vintage Spectrum computer into today’s world and expecting it to do the job of a modern Mac. Our stress response senses a misalignment and attempts to nudge us back onto the path of survival by releasing the motivator hormones. The problem is, the misalignment it senses is completely out of context. For example, a presentation at work, or financial pressures, perhaps too little physical contact with friends, or late night scrolling, which leads to disrupted sleep. You cannot quickly remedy the situation, and that’s if you even recognise it.

The Survival Road Metaphor: How Our Brains Nudge Us Back to Balance

Imagine survival as a straight road – from birth to death – the path of survival. Ideally, we snake gently back and forth across this road. Each time we stray, the brain’s stress response nudges us back on track. This natural zigzag keeps us aligned with survival, and it works well. At least it did, when we lived naturally. Today, many of us take sharp turns far off the road. Though the brain still sends nudges to return, we often don’t – or can’t – follow them. Instead, we find ourselves on long detours, only occasionally glimpsing the straight path again.

When we’re on the straight path, the body releases the feel-good rewarding hormones. When we verge off it, the brain releases the motivator hormones, which cause agitation. It’s a perfect process that keeps us on the path of survival – unless modern day problems and modern-day solutions trick your brain. Work pressure and addiction, for example.

Why You’re Not Broken – It’s the Conditions You Live In

If you don’t feel good, you’re probably not broken. The challenge isn’t you – it’s the conditions you live in. Modern life asks so much of us in ways that don’t match the rhythms and needs we evolved for. The good news is that change is possible. By reconnecting with the basics your body craves, you can begin to reset your nervous system.

How Therapy Can Help Reset Your Nervous System

Hypnotherapy, mindful rituals, and learning to listen deeply to your body are powerful tools to guide you gently back to the straight road.

If you don’t feel good you don’t need to struggle alone or “just get it together.” You can learn to recognise when your brain nudges you off course, and respond with kindness, patience, and practical steps. It is possible to honour your ancient biology in a modern world.

Don’t Feel good? The Journey Back

The path back isn’t about perfection. It’s about steady, small moves that help your nervous system remember how to balance stress with recovery, so you can live with more ease, resilience, and connection.

Therapy as an Ally: Reclaiming Internal Control and Resilience

Therapy is a powerful ally on this journey back to balance. Unlike quick fixes or external “magic pills,” therapy helps you reconnect with your own internal wisdom and regain control over your nervous system. Through hypnotherapy and deep listening, you learn to recognise your body’s signals and develop tools to respond in ways that soothe rather than trigger stress.

Developing an Internal Locus of Control Through Therapy

Through therapy, you can forge an internal locus of control and become the one who guides your mind and body gently back onto the path, rather than relying on external forces to “fix” you. Therapy provides a safe, supportive space to explore these patterns, uncover the roots of your stress, and practice new ways of being that feel authentic and sustainable.

How Hypnotherapy Resets Old Survival Responses

Hypnotherapy can help reset old survival responses that no longer serve you. By working with the nervous system you can nurture resilience and build a life aligned with your biology. Rather than erasing stress completely, you can learn to ride its waves skilfully, so it becomes a signal instead of overwhelm.

Moving From Being Pushed by Stress to Dancing with It

With time and practice, therapy helps you move from being pushed around by your stress response to dancing with it. You can find your rhythm between challenge and recovery, and step more fully into your human potential.
