3 Steps to Setting Powerful Self-Boundaries (That Actually Work)

You’ve probably heard the phrase – “set boundaries with others”, but what about the boundaries you set within yourself? Intrapersonal boundaries are the unsung heroes of personal growth, and in hypnotherapy, they can be the game-changer in achieving your goals. Let’s dive into how understanding and applying these boundaries can help you move forward.

Interpersonal boundaries are how you protect yourself from the behaviour of others, but intrapersonal boundaries are the commitments you set for yourself to stay aligned with what you want or value. Intrapersonal boundaries are different to willpower or self-discipline, and it’s a concept we can use within hypnotherapy to help you achieve your goals.

The Problem: The Struggle with Self-Boundaries

Intrapersonal boundaries are different to motivation, which relies on you feeling like doing something. An intrapersonal boundary is a non-negotiable commitment to your identity. For example, I exercise every day because I’ve decided it’s part of who I am and it’s part of my day. Motivation fluctuates, sometimes I’m full of energy and excited to get outside and pound the pavements. More often, if I took the time to consider it, I’d choose to stay at home instead.

Self-boundaries rely on the reasons for your goal. When you set yourself goals because of the ‘shoulds’ and ‘shouldn’ts’ it becomes hard to make them non-negotiable. Within hypnotherapy sessions, we can explore your purpose in life. Your passions, the things that matter to you, and the things that don’t. We’ll find the reasons that underlie your goals to create intrapersonal boundaries that are meaningful to you.

The Solution: Reframing Self-Discipline as Self-Boundaries

Most of the time when we think about boundaries, we’re trying to protect ourselves from external influences. This is the same with intrapersonal boundaries. You can use them to protect yourself from the unfocused mind or circumstances that try to pull you away from your values and inner purpose. You can use hypnotherapy to strengthen these self-boundaries by exploring unconscious resistance, self-identity and automatic behaviour patterns.

In some circumstances, knowing too much about yourself is limiting, rather than protective. The more we define ourselves by certain traits or labels, the more we risk reinforcing unconscious restrictions. If we believe we ‘can’t’ do something because of who we are, we create an invisible boundary that holds us back. This is the case with many social constructs. The more we hear about the challenges faced by certain personality types, the more they cement into the mind – limiting the belief you have in yourself. Hypnotherapy can help challenge these society-imposed limitations by uncovering unconscious resistance, reshaping self-identity, and shifting automatic behaviours.

3 Steps to Creating Intrapersonal Boundaries

  1. Your personal values are the things that are important to you – the principles you live by. They act as your own personal law, though you oversee the rules and can adapt them. To find your values, think about your lifestyle and the reasons behind it. Ask yourself, “Why do I do that?” Your answers will reveal priorities that translate into core values. Holding around five values helps you live authentically. Write them down so you can check your everyday actions against them. This conscious consideration will make living by your values habitual, guiding you towards your desired destination with clarity and purpose.

  1. Think about what you need to implement to live in alignment with your values. For example, if you value health, what does that mean to you? Do you need to eat a specific way, exercise a certain amount of times each week, and get a set amount of sleep? Perhaps you need to engage in the community more or socialise regularly. Clarify for yourself what behaviours and actions you need in your life to feel your life has value and purpose.

  1. Write non-negotiable boundaries for yourself that compliment your values. Not the “shoulds” and “should nots” but the behaviours and actions you need to take each day to live the life that resonates with you. An absolute necessity is that your values have meaning to you. Have respect for yourself and be clear. Write the behaviour, regularity, when and how. Make sure you’re realistic. You may find you need to switch something out to bring something in. For example, if you currently watch TV for an hour each day, but it doesn’t align with your values, and you feel like thirty minutes journaling, and thirty minutes more sleep fits better – switch it out.

Intrapersonal Boundaries in Hypnotherapy

Using intrapersonal boundaries in hypnotherapy offers a powerful approach to align your actions with your values. They help make your goals non-negotiable commitments, rather than fleeting motivations. By identifying your core values, defining the behaviours that support them, and establishing clear, meaningful self-boundaries, you create a framework for lasting change.

Hypnotherapy can help uncover and reshape unconscious limitations, strengthening your ability to uphold these boundaries with confidence and clarity. When your goals are rooted in purpose rather than external expectations, discipline becomes effortless, and transformation becomes inevitable. Through this process, you take control of your habits and identity, shaping a life that truly reflects who you are and what you stand for.
