How Hypnotherapy Can Support Fertility: A Holistic Approach to Parenthood

Approximately 28 days in a cycle, approximately 13 cycles in a year, approximately 24 hours of ovulation. Conception is a wonderfully magical thing that happens only in one specific moment of time. The likelihood of pregnancy from one sexual encounter varies, depending on several factors. However, we know the highest chance of pregnancy occurs when you have sex during the fertile window, which is the five days before ovulation and the day of ovulation. Outside of this, the chances of conception are almost non-existent, as there is no egg to meet the sperm. The egg lives for approximately 12 to 24 hours after ovulation.

A surge of luteinising hormone triggers the release of the egg from the ovary into the fallopian tube. This is a quick process, one moment the egg is in the ovary encased in a follicle. The next it’s broken free and is in the fallopian tube waiting for a sperm. The egg will live as long as it lives, typically dying within 24 hours. Sperm, on the other hand, can survive for up to 5 days. If you had sex within the past five days and there are healthy sperm in the fallopian tube, they’ll meet with the egg and fertilise it. This is the ideal textbook version. While humans likely struggled with conception throughout history, modern factors contribute to infertility becoming more prevalent.

The Mind Body Connection and Fertility

If you didn’t feel the stress of life already, it’s likely you will once you get into the depths of a fertility journey. Most people intend to keep away from infertility forums and revolving their life around pregnancy. However, this is increasingly difficult, especially with algorithms picking up your latest interests and deliberately showing you content that may increase your frustrations. Stress and anxiety are emotional blocks that can impact fertility. Hypnotherapy can help mitigate this.

In short, when your body is in the stress response (anxiety / fight or flight / fight, flight, freeze), the evolutionary response is to send resources to the areas of the body required for survival. This depletes other systems within the body, including the reproductive system.

When you use self-hypnosis / meditation, your body moves away from the stress response back into the default state of homeostasis (or allostasis depending on which perspective you like). This is the simplest way to use hypnosis to help you on your fertility journey, and something you can use regularly. If you have the capacity for more depth and can see a hypnotherapy one to one, you’ll get a treatment designed to tackle your specific situation.

Chronic Stress and Unresolved Emotions

The stress response is an essential survival mechanism that works well. Your body expects to enter this state periodically, and has processes that all kick in when it happens. Your body, however, is not set up to stay in this response. This is like a sprint compared to a marathon. The sprinter wouldn’t do well running a marathon, similarly your body doesn’t do well with long-term stress. Chronic stress and unresolved emotions cause hormonal imbalances and other physical manifestations which may affect conception. During your hypnotherapy sessions, you can target the root cause of your stress and resolve it, or learn techniques to keep your body in a calm state regardless of everything around you.

Limiting Beliefs about Fertility or Pregnancy

Some people experience limiting beliefs about fertility or pregnancy. You may strongly believe your body isn’t capable of pregnancy. Or you may struggle to see yourself as a good parent. I have certainly worked with people who were told by a doctor at a young age that they’ll need help getting pregnant as an adult. Interestingly, I do not always hear this from fertility clients, and some are people who conceived easily. The medics do not always get it right. Maybe your experience of childhood was so bad, you worry you will do the same to your children.

Regardless of your own limiting beliefs, hypnosis can help you shift any beliefs put on to you by other people, or yourself, and recreate positive healthy visuals. Although many people believe manifestation is woo woo, it is a fact that your brain behaves the same whether you do something or imagine yourself doing it. Your brain controls your body, so I personally always prefer to imagine what I want rather than what I don’t want.

What Happens During Hypnotherapy for Fertility?

Hypnotherapy for fertility sessions, like all holistic therapy, are personal to you. I offer a free initial consultation to all clients, in which I ask several questions that give me a deep understanding of what my client wants to achieve. Make sure your hypnotherapist has a similar process, so they can personalise the sessions, rather than following a flow chart and script.

Hypnosis is a natural state of mind, and all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. Your hypnotherapist acts as a guide, helping you switch your brain from an external to internal focus. Your hypnotherapist will use their expertise to decide which approach to take. Some common applications of therapy in hypnosis are;

  • Visualisations
  • Suggestions
  • Regression to cause
  • Reframing
  • Helping with motivation and commitment to lifestyle changes

You don’t have to view hypnotherapy as a replacement to medical intervention. People use hypnotherapy for fertility before, during and after medical intervention. They also use it instead of medical intervention. Hypnotherapy is something that will help you find the best mindset for medical intervention, should you wish to go down that route. Hypnotherapy is not a magic fix, but a supportive, empowering tool to complement medical treatment or natural approaches.
