Setting Boundaries with Yourself: The Key to Self-Respect and Growth
As someone who finds comfort in consistency, I live a life with a predictable rhythm, but I find doing the same walk twice almost impossible. This makes my hiking life wildly exciting, as each trail offers something new. But sometimes there’s a moment of discomfort – like entering land without clear signposts. The unnerving recognition that we might be in someone’s garden or perhaps a farmer’s field without public right of way. Essentially, a lack of signposting, which leaves us second guessing.
A boundary is a limit that helps us know we’re in the right place. Without boundaries or clear communication, it is easy to feel nervous and uncertain. Boundaries guide the limits and help us feel free within the confines. Boundaries give us the opportunity to be respectful and command respect from others.
Setting boundaries with yourself is as important as setting a boundary with someone else. It’s about creating a framework that will help you protect your commitments to yourself, so you stick to the path you’ve chosen. Your inner boundaries act as a guide, giving you the confidence to move forward while respecting your own needs and limits.
Do you struggle to maintain commitments to yourself or feel overwhelmed? Setting boundaries might be the solution you need.
Benefits of Setting Boundaries with Yourself
The first inhibitor to living within your own boundaries is not having any! If you nurture your mind and body connection, you may feel comfortable living within the confines of your own intuition. Formulating your own boundaries will help you,
- Increase your self-respect and confidence
- Improve your focus and productivity
- Improve your mental and physical health
- Improve your relationships with others
How to Set a Boundary With Myself
#1 – what is a boundary in practice? A boundary is a clear, defined limit you set for yourself to protect your wellbeing, time and energy. The boundary comes after you understand what you are and are not comfortable with, and what you will or will not accept. A boundary is an act of self-respect. Before you can put any boundary in place, you need to recognise your needs, desires and limits. Boundaries with yourself go hand in hand with values. Without personal values, it is hard to set boundaries, so if you haven’t done it already, click through to here to understand how to set your personal values.
#2. Define your own limits. If you know that you need to get a sleep opportunity of at least 8 hours each night, and your alarm is set for 6am, you might need to stop everything else by 9pm. Everybody lives differently, some people will need a boundary that limits their working hours. Perhaps you’ll need to set screen time restrictions. Others will need to make sure they put the book down at 10pm, rather than reading “just one more page”.
#3. Make non-negotiable commitments with yourself. If you want to exercise daily, you must prioritise it. Implement boundaries that give you the space to meet the commitments you set for yourself. Rather than finding excuses to not do things, build a picket fence around your commitments and protect them. If you want to make different food choices, create non-negotiable boundaries about what you will and will not eat.
#4. Recognise that boundaries with others are boundaries with yourself. The concept of boundaries applies both internally (how we treat ourselves) and externally (how we interact with others). Setting a limit with another person is a way to protect the boundaries you set for yourself. To respect your own needs and values, you’ll need boundaries with others. By clearly communicating these boundaries, you reinforce your commitment to honouring yourself. By upholding the standards you’ve set for your own well-being, you actively choose to prioritise your needs, protect your energy, and stay true to your values.
Boundaries are an invisible fence, although you cannot see them, they are vital in creating a sense of freedom and safety. Self-respect starts within. Before using boundaries externally, use them as an internal practise to guide you towards a more focused and intentional life. Boundaries need clear communication – not just with others, but with yourself. Start today by identifying one boundary you need in your life. Write it down, commit to it, and notice the positive changes it brings. When you take a step towards something you don’t want to do, remind yourself of your boundary and respect yourself the way you want others to respect you.
