Finding Calm in the Fertility Storm: A Mindful Approach to Emotions

Many young girls fear accidental pregnancy. Sex education is largely about how to avoid pregnancy, rather than how to achieve it. Moving from avoiding pregnancy to seeking it is like clicking a switch, there isn’t much in between. The mind moves from trying to prevent pregnancy to seeking pregnancy. And when most of us want something, we want it now! So when it doesn’t happen for months, or even years, there is a stirring of emotions. Helplessness. Blame, what are you doing wrong? You feel broken and wonder if it’ll ever happen. Sex becomes robotic, and you use techniques to aid your body. Special lubricants, shoulder stands, not going to the toilet all night. Lotions and potions. Anything you can think of to make it work. Those months of turmoil can feel hellish. If you’re in the middle of that fertility journey, you may feel the roller coaster of emotions that come with the female cycle as you move through hope, determination, uncertainty and then disappointment.

These feelings are common and natural, acknowledging them is an empowering step that can help you move away from a feeling of ‘stuck’. When you welcome everything, you give yourself space to express each one fully. You welcome the sensations in your body, no matter how uncomfortable. You welcome everything without dismissing it, suppressing it or rejecting anything that arises. Welcoming all emotions, without judgment or resistance, helps us process feelings more easily and gain insight into ourselves. By allowing emotions to arise naturally, we reduce their intensity, build self-compassion, and create space for healing. This approach helps us build resilience and increases the joy in life, as we learn to experience both positive and challenging emotions fully. It leads to greater inner peace and more balance.

Mindfulness as a Tool for Calming the Mind

Mindfulness is a powerful tool for observing and accepting emotions. It is particularly helpful during the ups and downs of a fertility journey. By staying grounded in the present moment, mindfulness will help you avoid past regrets or worries about the future. This practice creates space to observe and hold emotions as they arise, reducing the feeling of being overwhelmed. Mindfulness also encourages connection with the body and breath, nurturing a positive mind-body relationship. This calming approach can help build self-compassion, supporting you on your fertility path with patience and resilience.

Hypnotherapy and Emotional Awareness

Hypnotherapy can support your mindfulness practise by helping you bring to the surface, process and release deep-seated emotions that may accompany the challenge that trying to conceive sometimes brings. This gentle process will encourage you to explore and heal emotions associated with uncertainty, loss, or hope, so you can uncover inner strengths. By observing thoughts and emotions calmly through hypnotherapy, you can ease the effect of stress on your body, to support your internal environment.

Practical Techniques to Find Calm and Presence

Here are a few simple techniques that can help you feel calm and grounded during your fertility journey:

  • Breathing Exercises: Deep belly breathing – inhaling deeply through your nose and exhaling slowly through your mouth—can provide immediate relief from stress. This simple exercise helps bring focus back to the present moment, creating a sense of calm.
  • Body Scan Meditation: Try a body scan by gently moving attention from head to toe, noticing and releasing any tension. This practice helps release stress held in the body, promoting relaxation, which is particularly grounding during challenging moments.
  • Affirmations for Self-Compassion: Positive affirmations, such as “I am doing my best” or “I am worthy of love and care,” can combat negative thoughts and self-doubt. Regularly using affirmations can foster a kinder inner dialogue, essential when facing fertility-related stress.
Practising these techniques regularly, even for a few minutes a day, can help create calm and presence over time.

Embracing Self-Compassion and Patience

Self-compassion is essential on a journey where self-criticism and impatience are common. Viewing yourself with kindness allows room for vulnerability, mistakes, and self-forgiveness. Patience – toward yourself and the process – is key, as small steps toward calm can have a meaningful impact.

The fertility journey can be emotionally demanding, but mindfulness and hypnotherapy can offer valuable tools for grounding and resilience. Embracing mindfulness creates small, calming moments, reminding you of the strength you have. This inner peace can support and uplift you throughout the process, bringing a sense of calm within the storm.
