I wasn’t ever a true Barbie fan. The trees had grabbed my interest by the time I knew who Barbie was, and I spent most of my time on a branch. Armed with friends in pink tracksuits, the film transported us into a magical world where everything is pink, sparkly, and downright fabulous. Barbie and her gang of fashion-forward friends were on a mission to save the day. With catchy tunes and witty one-liners, this movie was a delightful dose of nostalgia sprinkled with glitter. The best bit of the movie for me was the female solidarity and support. Regardless of their image, they all thought each other wonderful and didn’t hold back their praise for one another. Barbie world is on point.

 

In a world heavily influenced by media and societal beauty standards, Barbie didn’t do us any favours in empowering body confidence. The movie tries to correct this, though I’m not 100% sure it does the best job.
