Fear of Flying and Other Holiday Phobias: Can Hypnotherapy Help?

Originally published on 28 April 2015 Updated 29 June 2026

Can hypnotherapy help with travel anxiety and phobias?

Yes. Hypnotherapy is a good way to help with a fear of flying, travel anxiety, fears related to water, spiders or snakes, and other phobias that affect holidays and everyday life. By working with the thoughts and emotional responses associated with fear, hypnotherapy may help reduce anxiety and increase confidence in situations that have previously felt difficult or overwhelming

Has a fear or phobia ever stopped you booking a holiday or affected your enjoyment of travelling? As the holiday season approaches, I often hear from people who are struggling with a fear of flying or other travel-related fears. You may have booked your holiday months ago, and then found your anxiety gradually increasing as the departure date gets closer. Hypnotherapy is widely used to help people with fears and phobias, including those that can affect travel and limit the places and experiences you feel comfortable enjoying.

Fear of flying is one of the most common holiday concerns, although it is not the only one. If you have aquaphobia, a fear of water, you may avoid beach holidays or feel uneasy about staying somewhere with a swimming pool. If you have arachnophobia, a fear of spiders, or ophidiophobia, a fear of snakes, certain destinations may feel out of reach. Holiday fears and phobias can influence where you travel, the activities you take part in and even whether you decide to book a trip at all.

What Is the Difference Between a Fear and a Phobia?

A phobia is generally more intense than a fear, and can have a greater impact on your decisions and daily life. If you have a fear of flying, you may still book the holiday and board the plane, although you might notice your anxiety increasing as the departure date approaches. During the flight, you may feel tense or worried, and thoughts about the return journey can sometimes affect your enjoyment of the holiday.

If you have a phobia of flying, you may avoid booking a flight altogether or experience such a high level of anxiety that travelling feels impossible. People experience fears and phobias in different ways, and there is no clear line between the two. What matters most is the extent to which the fear affects your life, and limits the things you would like to do. Hypnotherapy can help with both fears and phobias, including fear of flying and other travel-related anxieties.

Body Confidence and Anxiety About Wearing Swimwear

For some people, holidays bring up worries that have little to do with travelling itself. You may feel anxious about wearing swimwear or avoid activities such as swimming, because you feel self-conscious about your body. As spring and summer approach, images of swimwear and holiday bodies become more visible in magazines, shops and on social media, which can increase feelings of anxiety and self-awareness.

Concerns about body image can affect confidence and stop you from fully enjoying your holiday. Hypnotherapy can help you explore the thoughts and feelings that contribute to low self-confidence, and support you to develop a more comfortable relationship with your body. For some people, hypnotherapy can also be part of a wider approach to making healthy lifestyle changes, including weight management where appropriate.

Fears and Phobias Aren’t Limited to Holidays

Recently, I was out walking with a friend when she mentioned a post on a local Facebook page reminding people about adders in nearby woodland. The intention of the post was to make dog owners aware, but for someone with a fear of snakes, it was unsettling news. My friend loves walking in the forest, so the thought of encountering a snake immediately changed how she felt about a place she normally enjoys.

This is a reminder that fears and phobias can affect many areas of life, not just holidays and travel. Some people seek hypnotherapy for a fear of flying, while others want help with a fear of snakes, spiders, needles or the dentist. Whatever the fear may be, if it is causing anxiety or limiting the things you would like to do, it is worth exploring the support that is available.
